Steps for Non-Ferrous Metal Recycling

5/24/2012

Nonferrous metals refer to aluminum, copper, lead, zinc, nickel, titanium, cobalt, chromium and other precious metals. Although these metals can be produced, it would consume lesser energy if these metals are recycled instead of made. Aluminum recycling consumes 95% lesser compared to making it from raw materials. Unlike ferrous metal though, non-ferrous metal recycling entails separation of these different metals from each other so that they can be properly processed.

Non-ferrous metal recycling involves an intricate process with the use of machine. Once sorting is done, the first step is packing together the non-ferrous metal. This is to ensure that they can be easily transported from one place to the recycling centers. At the same time, it would be a lot easier to carry if the metals are flattened. It will then be cut into handy sizes. This cutting process is done by hydraulic machinery that applies great pressure to the metal in order to be sliced appropriately. Although these non-ferrous metals have been pre-sorted, they will be sorted again using a shredder that uses electrical current, high pressure and liquid floating system. By doing this, that ferrous metals are thoroughly separated from non-ferrous metals.

Finally, these non-ferrous metals will be placed in a furnace to undergo melting. The resulting materials will be converted to flat sheet or shaped product such as tubing ready to be used again.

Non-ferrous metal recycling helps not only in saving energy but in lessening waste materials that could possibly end up in landfills. Even if non-ferrous metals undergo chemical processes, its physical properties are still the same. Aluminum recycled products are used in construction, transportation, packaging, electricity and tableware. Recycled copper is heavily used in electrical component, piping, roofing and insulation and cookware. Through recycling, enormous production of these metals is still possible without having to pose great risk in the environment.

Well that was brief information on non-ferrous metal recycling. I was aware about the need and benefits of recycled meals, I didn't know that it requires separation of different metals from each other.

Great Post ! I would like to add some more information like Ferrous and Non-ferrous metals are accepted by all scrap yards for recycling, but Non-ferrous metals, such as copper, aluminum, brass, stainless steel and bronze, are more valuable than Ferrous metals, like steel and iron.

I've got some extra steel laying around. It would be a good idea to get it recycled. I will have to find a place that would be able to take it as I know only certain recyclers do.

I like that you mentioned that metal recycling ultimately reduces waste that just end up in landfills. I've been studying how to weld titanium for my metalworking project so I'm going to need some test runs before actually doing it. Perhaps it would be better if I look for recycled titanium for sale so that my test runs wouldn't be too wasteful.

You made a good point when you shared that it is better to recycle nonferrous metals since the production of them consumes a lot of energy. My brother just mentioned the other day that he is planning to declutter his garage so he can make some space for his car. I will suggest to him looking for any metal that is no longer useful to be recycled at a reliable facility.

It's good to know that non-ferrous metal recycling can be one of the ways to reduce waste getting into landfills. I'm interested in being more proactive in recycling so I'd like to start tidying up a lot more in my home. I have a lot of junk in my shed that would probably end up in a landfill if I don't properly sort them out.

I've been working on a home renovation project, and now I have some extra copper wires laying around after removing a wall. It makes sense that I might want to recycle it properly! I'll be sure to have the rubber stripped away from the copper so that it can be recycled correctly.

Thanks for pointing out that recycle copper is used in electrical components, piping, and other things. As you said, through recycling, metals can reduce risk in the environment. I guess I should look for copper wire buyers near our area on Monday. We have a lot of scrap metals in our garage that we need to get rid of.

I've got some old metal pieces, and I'm not sure what to do about it. It makes sense that I would want to have the metal pieces properly recycled. That seems like a good way to ensure that it gets handled properly.

I like how you mentioned that you can carry more easily if the metals are flattened. My uncle mentioned to me last night that he is planning to dispose of his scrap metals and asked if I have any idea what is the best option to do. Thanks to this informative article and I'll be sure to tell him that he can consult a well-known metal recycling service as they can answer all his inquiries.

I appreciate that you explained these metals can be created, but recycling them rather than manufacturing them would save energy. My best friend is looking for some info, this should help him. I appreciate that you helped me learn more about metal recycling.

Thank you for explaining that we can save energy and reduce waste materials by recycling non-ferrous metal. We've been noticing that we see lots of different kinds of metal around our house that we would usually just throw away. We'll try to be more careful about it and see if we can focus more on recycling all of our old metals.

It's interesting to know that the physical properties of nonferrous metals would still be the same no matter the chemical procedures they have been in. I guess this means that copper recycling will not reduce the value of the material no matter how much they get reused for other purposes. That means that we can reduce the waste going to landfills if more items are made from such metals.

I liked what you explained about recycling non-ferrous metals to help save energy and reduce our waste. I have a cousin who's tearing down an old structure to build a commercial building next month, so I'll email your recycling tips to him right away. Thanks for the insight on how non-ferrous materials are recycled and used in different industries.
